VRChat
2017
The sourced concerns are substantially offset by delivered value.
What counts as a cash grab?
Commercial extraction prioritized over meaningful consumer or creative value. Profit, popularity, adaptations, sequels, remakes, high budgets, and normal marketing do not count by themselves.
Why?
VRChat is a free-to-play social VR platform with a long history of user-generated worlds and avatars, the PC client remains free on Steam. Since 2020 the studio has introduced paid offerings including VRChat Plus, and from 2023 onward it launched a built-in Creator Economy, avatar marketplace, and in-client Credits system that let creators sell content and users buy subscriptions or items. Official rules give VRChat control over pricing and exchange rates, and some safety features were initially tied to VRC+ causing community backlash over perceived paywalls.
- VRChat is free to download and play on PC, the core platform remains free-to-play.
- VRChat Plus is an ongoing paid subscription that charges for convenience and cosmetic features and has defined monthly and yearly pricing.
- VRChat implemented an in-client Creator Economy and Avatar Marketplace enabling purchases with VRChat Credits and creator payouts.
