Splatoon 2
2017
The sourced concerns are substantially offset by delivered value.
What counts as a cash grab?
Commercial extraction prioritized over meaningful consumer or creative value. Profit, popularity, adaptations, sequels, remakes, high budgets, and normal marketing do not count by themselves.
Why?
Splatoon 2 launched July 21, 2017 as a full-priced Nintendo Switch exclusive and received extensive free post-launch updates adding maps, gear, modes and balance patches. Nintendo released one paid DLC, Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion, on June 13, 2018 for $19.99 which critics described as substantial single-player content. The base game contained no microtransactions or loot boxes, gear and items were obtained via in-game currency, and Nintendo later made the Octo Expansion available through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.
- Extensive free updates added many maps, 140+ gear pieces, Salmon Run and features post-launch.
- No built-in microtransactions or loot boxes, gear purchased with in-game currency.
- Paid DLC Octo Expansion sold separately for $19.99 but was widely reviewed as substantial content.

- Some additional content was included in initial data and activated later, but no evidence of predatory pricing or rushed release.
