Sonic 3 and Knuckles
1994
Insufficient evidence
We did not find enough credible, independent evidence to publish a numeric cash-grab score. Unrated is more honest than a guess.
What counts as a cash grab?
Commercial extraction prioritized over meaningful consumer or creative value. Profit, popularity, adaptations, sequels, remakes, high budgets, and normal marketing do not count by themselves.
Why?
Sonic 3 and Knuckles was originally one larger project that was released as two cartridges in 1994 after cartridge size limits and tight promotional and schedule deadlines; the later Sonic & Knuckles cartridge used a novel lock-on connector to restore the intended combined experience. Contemporary developer interviews and retrospectives describe the split as schedule and hardware driven while also praising the lock-on innovation and the substantial additional levels and playable content when combined. I found no credible reporting that Sega split the project as a predatory monetization scheme.
- Developer interviews and retrospectives say the single project was split late for deadline and cartridge size reasons.
- Lock-on technology was an explicit technical innovation that combined both releases into a larger game.
- The combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles delivers substantial new levels, playable Knuckles, and save features not present in Sonic & Knuckles alone.
