What counts as a cash grab?
Commercial extraction prioritized over meaningful consumer or creative value. Profit, popularity, adaptations, sequels, remakes, high budgets, and normal marketing do not count by themselves.
Why?
RuneScape has a long history of live-service monetization, including Solomon's General Store (2012) and the chance-based Treasure Hunter system which sold keys, cosmetics, and gameplay-benefitting items such as XP lamps and portable bonuses. Jagex publicly acknowledged MTX eroded game integrity and ran a community vote that led to Treasure Hunter being removed on January 19, 2026. At the same time RuneScape has delivered continuous content updates, major technical and visual work, and large-scale roadmaps and investments, so monetization evidence exists but is balanced by sustained production investment.
- RuneScape implemented Solomon's General Store and Treasure Hunter which sold real-money items and keys that affected progression.
- Jagex acknowledged MTX harmed game integrity and removed Treasure Hunter after a 2025 community vote, with removal on January 19, 2026.
- Players and community sources long criticized chance-based rewards and multiple currencies as predatory or overly extractive.
